Notes
The
importance
of
understanding
juror
perceptions
of
witness
credibility
has
increased
over
the
last
few
decades
.
Understanding
how
jurors
perceive
eyewitness
testimony
may
assist
in
bringing
about
further
changes
within
the
judicial
system
.
It
may
also
assist
an
attorney
in
formulating
questions
or
even
in
making
the
decision
to
place
the
witness
on the
stand
. This
study
investigated
how the
role
of
eyewitness
testimony
affects
jurors
'
perceptions
of
credibility
and how these
perceptions
influence
the
verdict
rendered
and
sentence
imposed
upon
the
defendant
.
One
hundred
and
thirty
participants
from a
local
university
and the
general
population
were
recruited
for
participation
.
Participants
were
assigned
to
one
of
six
written
trial
transcript
scenarios
.
Three
of the
written
trial
transcript
scenarios
presented
the
witness
as the
victim
of an
acquaintance
sexual
assault
with the
age
of
victim
varying
; a
six-year-old
, a
sixteen-year-old
, and an
eighty-year-old
witness
. The
other
three
written
trial
transcript
scenarios
presented
the
witness
of an
acquaintance
sexual
assault
of a
peer
with the
age
of the
witness
varying
: a
six-year-old
, a
sixteen-year-old
, and an
eighty-year-old
witness
.
Participants
were
asked
to
complete
a
Demographic
Information
questionnaire
, a
Witness
Credibility
questionnaire
, and a
Verdict
and
Sentencing
questionnaire
.
Global
credibility
scores
were
calculated
to
assess
the
overall
credibility
assigned
to
each
group
.
Witness
credibility
and
verdict
rendered
were
examined
in
relationship
to the
witness's
role
in the
case
.
Result
did
not
support
the
hypothesis
that the
witness
'
age
or
case
affected
ratings
of
credibility
. A
strong
relationship
between
ratings
of
credibility
and
verdicts
rendered
were also not
found
.
