Title
Le
voyage
de
J.M.G
.
Le
Clézio
en
soi
et
dans
le
monde
:
une
traversée
de
métamorphoses
textuelles
Publisher
Central Connecticut State University
Date
2002
Resource Type
Master's Thesis
Notes
It
is
undeniable
that
conflict
and
change
are a
part
or
life
. This
often
produces
confusion
or
disillusionment
,
which
can
be
difficult
for
adolescents
. The
author's
perception
of
some
of the
challenges
which
contemporary
youth
face
may
be a
motivating
factor
in
many
of his
writings
. These
challenges
include
an
alienation
from
nature
,
consumerism
, and
dissatisfaction
with
personal
identity
that
denies
intrinsic
worth
. This
study
examines
the
life
of
J
.
M
.
G
.
Le
Clézio
and
emphasizes
events
by
which
his
own
consciousness
developed
. His
gradual
awareness
of his
personal
identity
combined
with the
mastery
of
literary
and
poetic
skills
enabled
him to
present
to his
readers
in a
pleasurable
manner
the
need
for
change
. The
study
traces
his
steps
by
means
of the
characters
and
events
in his
novels
,
which
are
autobiographical
in
nature
.
Many
biographical
facts
were
obtained
from a
recent
illustrated
essay
, and
literary
journals
were a
source
to
explore
recurring
themes
,
such
as
silence
,
desert
,
sea
and
sun
,
which
correspond
directly
with
Le
Clézio's
life
and
interests
.
Description
of the
author's
sojourns
in
Nigeria
,
Mauritius
,
Panama
and
Mexico
provided
the
important
backdrop
against
which
the
author
developed
his
own
philosophy
and
world
view
.
Additional
literary
and
electronic
sources
interpreted
the
writer's
works
and
discussed
his
evolving
literary
voice
and
style
.
Englightening
conversations
between
the
author
and
several
journalists
revealed
important
aspects
of the
author's
personality
and
motivation
so
that the
correspondance
to his
writings
was
easily
recognized
. In an
earlier
work
,
Extase
Matérielle
(
1967
)
,
Le
Clézio
grappled
with
philosophical
and
existential
issues
.
Somewhat
radicalized
, his
new
vision
then
appears
in
Voyages
de
l'Autre
Côté
, an
episodic
novel
in an
unconventionel
form
, and his
revolutionary
preference
for
mental
evasion
by
means
of
imagination
and
dream
contributes
to his
reputation
as a
post
modern
poet
. The
study
begins
by a
brief
investigation
of the
author's
Breton
ancestors
,
followed
by a
brief
overview
of his
childhood
in
France
during
World
War
II
.
Early
literary
influences
are
reported
,
followed
by a
description
of his
voyage
to
Nigeria
, a
pivotal
event
in his
life
. This
is
followed
by a
presentation
of the
author's
findings
when
he
researched
his
ancestors
on the
island
of
Mauritius
many
years
later
. His
discoveries
become
an
integral
part
of his
novel
Le
Chercheur
d'or
. The
third
chapter
is
a
discussion
of the
stages
of
psychological
development
.
It
examines
the
process
which
leads
to
individuation
and
beyond
it
to the
liberty
of
transcendance
.
Several
characteres
of
Chercheur
d'or
and
Voyages
de
l'autre
côté
exemplify
these
stages
.
Continued
evolution
of
consciousness
occurs
as a
result
of
journeys
to
Mexico
and
Panama
, and the
writer
begins
to
assert
his
opposition
to
technology
that
harms
the
planet
.
Unjust
societal
practices
that
affect
marginalized
groups
of
people
are
questioned
.
Echos
of this
activist
behavior
appear
in
Le
Chercher
d'or
.
Four
stories
from the
collection
Mondo
et
autres
histoires
are
analyzed
.
Each
story
concerns
young
searchers
and
dreamers
whose
individual
rites
of
initiations
bear
a
resemblance
to the
developmental
trajectory
of
J
.
M
.
G
.
Le
Clézio
.
