Notes
When
Flaubert's
masterpiece
,
Madame
Bovary
, was
published
in
1857
, the
success
was
immediate
.
Despite
its
popularity
, the
novel
was
disliked
by the
Imperial
censors
. The
author
was
charged
with
insulting
the
public
morality
and
offending
decent
manners
. In
fact
the
novel
went
to
trial
. The
plot
seems
rather
inoffensive
;
Emma
Bovary
, the
wife
of a
small
town
physician
,
acts
on her
dreams
,
loves
and
longing
,
which
lead
her to
adultery
and
suicide
. The
purpose
of this
thesis
is
to
analyze
the
1856
trial
in
order
to
ascertain
what was
offensive
to the
religion
and
public
morality
in the
novel
, to
show
how that
offense
reflected
the
moral
censorship
of the
period
, and to
present
a
contemporary
view
of the
1856
trial
. The
Introduction
provides
a
study
of
Gustave
Flaubert
as a
realist
writer
. The
next
chapter
presents
a
short
history
of
France's
censorship
,
especially
in the
second
half
of the
nineteenth
century
. The
study
then
looks
at
Flaubert's
life
from his
birth
to
maturity
, his
family
, his
education
, as
well
as the
artistic
and
social
environment
that
surrounded
him and
influenced
his
work
. The
following
chapters
focus
on the
trial
of
Madame
Bovary
, the
speeches
given
by the
Imperial
prosecutor
Pinard
and the
defender
Snard
, then
Madame
Bovary
and the
critics
, the
beauty
of
Flaubert's
art
, and a
contemporary
attitude
toward
the
1856
trial
.
Finally
, the
study
concludes
that
Flaubert
used
Emma's
character
and her
life
experience
as a
means
of
expressing
his
own
realist
views
on
society
. By
depicting
his
voice
through
his
characters
he was
actually
only
attempting
to
promote
virtue
and the
beauty
of his
art
defends
him from the
accusation
of
immorality
.
