Notes
The
demographics
of
our
society
are
constantly
changing
and
continue
to
impact
the
curriculum
of
our
schools
.
Educators
are
faced
with the
dilemma
of how to
address
the
diverse
learning
needs
of the
students
in their
classroom
and
Multicultural
Education
has
emerged
as the
educational
savior
to
address
diversity
issues
. A
multicultural
education
calls
for
total
reform
of the
schools
curriculum
that
is
conceptual
and
interdisciplinary
. A
multicultural
curriculum
can
foster
problem
solving
skills
and
critical
thinking
skills
in
students
that will, in
turn
,
promote
social
action
against
racism
and
discrimination
.
Teachers
must
realize
that
more
meaningful
connections
are
made
to a
student's
life
from
culturally
relevant
teaching
. This
study
addresses
the
issues
surrounding
the
implementation
of
multicultural
education
in
our
schools
. An
investigation
of the
2005
summer
program
,
Multicultural
Arts
and
Technology
(MAT)
, has
helped
in
providing
future
suggestions
for
multicultural
instruction
through
the
arts
.
Questions
addressed
how a
four-week
summer
art
program
can
effectively
teach
students
to
value
cultural
identity
and
diversity
.
Research
methods
were
based
on
finding
the
most
effective
ways
to
measure
learning
that
occurs
from a
multicultural
education
.
Implementation
results
of the
summer
program
and
documentation
of
recorded
changes
to the
2005
summer
program
are
presented
. This
action
research
was
based
on the
results
made
from the
changes
to the
journal
assignments
, a
diversity
workshop
, and
pre
and
post
tests
of the
MAT
summer
art
program
.
Collected
data
included
finding
emerging
patterns
from
students
'
journal
responses
,
diversity
workshop
evaluations
, and
tallying
of the
answers
to the
pre
and
post
test
.
