The
purpose
of this
study
was to
see
if
giving
students
direct
and
systematic
instruction
in
phonics
,
applied
to the
Cast-a-Spell
program
would
improve
their
reading
and
writing
skills
.
Two
first
grade
inner
city
classes
were
involved
in this
study
.
Both
classrooms
were
provided
with a
balanced
literacy
approach
to
teaching
literacy
.
Both
classrooms
were
taught
spelling
by the
Cast-a-Spell
program
, but the
experimental
group
implemented
the
phonic
"
Marking
System
"
developed
by
Dr
.
Patti
Lynn
O'Brien
.
Each
student
was
pre-tested
and
post-tested
. The
researcher
relied
on
three
assessments
to
measure
the
students
'
success
: a
nonsense
word
test
, the
Direct
Reading
Assessment
(DRA)
, and
journal
writing
.
Post-test
data
indicated
that
students
in the
experimental
group
were
able
to
decode
nonsense
words
more
accurately
than the
control
group
. The
DRA
test
and
journal
writing
scores
also
suggest
that
phonics
increased
the
accuracy
of the
experimental
groups
reading
and
spelling
.
