Abstract
As
Denmark
becomes
increasingly
part
of the
global
economy
, the
ethnic
homogeneity
it
has
long
experienced
is
changing
.
Beginning
in the
1960s
with the
arrival
of
Turkish
immigrants
,
Danes
received
their
first
experience
with a
resident
population
who
varied
from the
mainstream
Danish
society
. With the
sudden
increase
in
immigration
in the
form
of
asylum
seekers
through
the
1980s
and
1990s
,
Danes
began
to
question
the
effects
these
immigrants
were
having
on their
country
. As a
result
of
open
debate
and the
emergence
of
vocalized
anti-immigrant
groups
,
immigration
has
now
become
a
controversial
topic
among
the
Danish
public
. The
2005
publication
in a
Danish
newspaper
of
cartoons
depicting
the
Prophet
Mohammed
brought
international
attention
to
apparent
racism
and
xenophobia
in a
country
that had
historically
prided
itself
on its
tolerance
.
Through
research
,
personal
observation
, and
interviews
, this
thesis
seeks
to
find
the
roots
(or
root
causes)
of this
anti-immigrant
movement
and
examine
its
effects
on
Danish
society
today
. In
particular
the
geographic
dimensions
of
immigration
to
Denmark
is
documented
and
analyzed
. The
topic
of
immigration
and the
inability
to
integrate
non-Western
immigrants
has
clearly
polarized
Danish
society
.
Though
many
Danes
would
still
like
to
continue
a
trend
toward
tolerance
,
it
is
apparent
that there
is
likewise
a
growing
faction
that would
like
to
see
immigration
decrease
. The
rise
of the
Danish
People's
Party
is
examined
as a
source
of
much
of the
growth
of
anti-immigrant
policies
in
Denmark
. The
perpetuation
of
stereotyping
as an
obstacle
to
integration
is
also
examined
in
various
public
sectors
. The
transformation
from the
Danish
tribe
,
exuding
tolerance
and
goodwill
,
toward
all
in
society
to
one
of
intolerance
toward
its
newest
residents
is
currently
shaping
the
future
Denmark
and
leading
the
way
in
some
of the
strictest
immigration
laws
in
Europe
.
