American

Notes
Subterranean
housing
has
long
been an
integral
part
of
human
history
.
Naturally
occurring
underground
spaces
provided
shelter
for the
earliest
humans
.
Occupation
of the
subscape
from
100
B.C
. to
present
day
exemplifies
the
significance
of the
subterranean
landscape
in
human
culture
.
However
, the
human/subterranean
landscape
relationship
is
not
limited
to
historical
occupation
.
While
the
majority
of the
current
North
American
population
lives
above
ground
, the "
subscape
"
(subterranean
landscape)
is
seeded
with
underground
houses
. The
inconspicuous
nature
of
underground
architecture
tends
to
obscure
the
locations
,
characteristics
and
motivations
of
subterranean
housing
. This
thesis
identifies
the
locations
and
characteristics
of
underground
housing
types
and
analyzes
motivating
factors
impacting
the
personal
decision
to
occupy
the
North
American
subscape
. In
addition
, this
study
advocates
the
subscape
as a
viable
and
important
area
for
research
for
geography
as
well
as
other
disciplines
.
