Notes	Women who have sex with women (WSW) are an understudied population. This study examined the differences between sexual minority women of color with HIV/AIDS and sexual minority women of color without HIV/AIDS. Outcome variables that were measured were depression, physical complaints, alcohol use, drug use, stressors, perceived stress, and social support. It was predicted that participants with HIV/AIDS will score higher on all of these measures except social support. Among women with HIV/AIDS, it is hypothesized that those with higher levels of stress will show more depressive and physical symptoms as well as use alcohol and drugs more often. It is also hypothesized that among participants with HIV/AIDS those who have greater social support will show report less stress and less depressive and physical symptoms as well as alcohol and drug use. Data for this thesis was part of a larger study on stress and health among sexual minority women throughout New York City (DiPlacido, 1998). Differences between the HIV/AIDS and non-HIV/AIDS groups were explored using independent samples t-tests. Differences among the HIV/AIDS subsample were explored using a Pearson r correlation. It was found that the HIV/AIDS subsample reported more physical symptoms and drug use than the subsample without HIV/AIDS. Among the HIV/AIDS subsample, daily hassles were related to more alcohol use, life events were related to more alcohol and drug use, and perceived stress was associated with more physical complaints. Also, the more social support a participant had the less perceived stress they reported. Future research should conduct similar comprehensive studies with sexual minority women with and without HIV/AIDS to see if more differences emerge. Future studies should see if social support acts as a buffer, reducing the negative health effects of appraisal of stress and also stressors, since in this study social support was only related to perceived stress and not daily hassles or life events. Also, are there differences between women of color and Caucasian women? This study is a starting point that future research can build upon in order to understand the physical and psychological health effects HIV/AIDS has on WSW.
