Notes
The
Puritan
settlers
who
established
England's
colony
in
Connecticut
during
the
period
from
1630
to
1660
brought
forth
and
nurtured
the
seeds
of
democratic
ideals
for
America
and the
world
. The
primary
document
that
fertilized
Connecticut's
rich
,
developing
ground
of
democratic
tendencies
in the
North
American
colony
was The
Fundamental
Orders
of
1639
,
developed
and
implemented
by the
first
generation
of
Connecticut
Puritans
.
While
historians
remain
divided
on
consecrating
a
relationship
between
these
Puritan's
actions
and what
we
consider
modern
democracy
, this
thesis
proves
that a
relationship
exists
between
democracy
and the
Reverend
Thomas
Hooker
and his
followers
, and that this
relationship
did
contribute
mightily
to the
beginning
of
American
democracy
.
Through
researching
scholarly
studies
completed
on
Thomas
Hooker
and his
congregation
,
government
documents
relating
to the
formation
of the
Connecticut
colony
,
government
documents
relating
to the
governance
of the
colony
,
contemporary
writings
and
correspondence
, and
sermons
delivered
by
Thomas
Hooker
,
it
is
proven
that
Thomas
Hooker's
first
generation
Connecticut
Puritans
had a
direct
and
formative
impact
on the
beginning
of
democracy
in
America
.
Evidence
is
presented
initially
by
reviewing
scholarly
work
on the
topic
,
secondly
by
researching
the
Puritan
background
with
respect
to the
development
of the
Connecticut
colony
and
establishment
of the
Fundamental
Orders
, and
finally
by
examining
the
relationship
between
the
Fundamental
Orders
and
future
efforts
on the
road
to
modern
democracy
in
Connecticut
and
America
.
Through
this
course
of
examination
it
is
proven
that the
actions
of
Connecticut's
first
generation
of
Puritans
are a
vital
and
integral
building
block
in the
democratic
foundation
of
modern
Connecticut
and the
United
States
of
America
as
four
vital
questions
are
answered
:
First
,
did
Thomas
Hooker
as the
principal
religious
leader
in
early
Connecticut
,
contribute
to the
efforts
of the
Connecticut
Puritans
in this
political
endeavor
?
Second
: Were the
Fundamental
Orders
a
constitution
?
Third
: What
relationship
exists
between
the
individual
and
government
in
first
generation
Puritan
Connecticut
? And the
final
question
:
Do
the
Fundamental
Orders
, and
therefore
the
first
generation
Connecticut
Puritan
society
,
qualify
as
deserving
the
term
"
democratic
"?
