ABSTRACT
: In "
Hipsters
and
Chicks
:
Sex
,
Lies
and
Beat
Literature
"
I
consider
the
importance
of
gender
roles
within
Beat
Literature
.
One
of the
many
facets
of
American
life
that the
Beats
came
to
question
was
predetermined
gender
roles
.
My
thesis
examines
Go
by
John
Clellon
Homes
, On the
Road
by
Jack
Kerouac
, and
Come
and
Join
the
Dance
by
Joyce
Johnson
as
well
as
Johnson's
memoir
,
Minor
Characters
. In
working
to
articulate
the
many
facets
that
defined
accepted
gender
roles
as
well
as
consider
the
consequences
of
rebelling
against
those
roles
,
I
use
the
seminal
text
on the
role
of
mid-20th
century
American
women
,
Betty
Friedan's
The
Feminine
Mystique—a
work
that
clarifies
and
complicated
the
expected
role
of
women
during
this
time
period
. In
attempting
to
live
lives
that would
satisfy
urges
that were
outside
the
acceptance
of
mainstream
society
, the
Beats
tried
to
drop
the
performative
gender
roles
that
defined
much
of
mid-20th
century
American
life
. By
looking
at
Beat
literature
through
the
lens
of
gender
and
performance
theory
, "
Hipsters
and
Chicks
"
proposes
that
gender
roles
during
the
Beat
period
were
assumed
rather
than
innate
and a
person
could
choose
to
perform
the
Beat
role
. In
living
according
to
Beat
standards
, the
Beat
chose
to
make
a
difficult
choice
that
often
put
them at
odds
with
mainstream
society
;
however
, the
importance
of the
Beat
Generation
and the
rebellion
they
officiated
cannot
be
understated
.
Without
the
framework
erected
by the
Beat
Generation
, the
rebellions
enacted
by
later
generations
that
lead
to
advancements
in the
rights
of
women
and
African-Americans
may
never
have
developed
.
