Notes
Evolution-education
in
America
has been a
fascination
of the
public
ever
since
the
Scopes
trial
of the
1920's
. The
controversy
has not
subsided
despite
the
supreme
court's
rulings
regarding
this
topic
. As has been the
case
with
many
controversial
topics
,
public
opinion
has not been
swayed
solely
on the
government's
dismissal
of
anti-evolution
and
equal
time
laws
.
Evolution
is
one
of the
most
widely
known
scientific
concepts
in
America
today
.
However
, the
majority
of
Americans
who
have
heard
of
evolutionary
biology
do
not
understand
it
. The
lack
of
understanding
between
scientists
and the
general
public
has,
throughout
the
last
century
,
led
to
many
disputes
concerning
evolution-education
in
America's
schools
.
Recently
,
state
and
national
educational
standards
have
begun
including
evolution
as an
integral
part
of
science
education
.
However
, the
views
of
society
and of
individual
teachers
have
led
to
continuous
conflicts
and
substandard
evolution-education
for
students
. The
best
opportunity
for the
scientific
community
to
combat
rejection
of this
extremely
important
biological
concept
is
to
teach
evolution
, in
schools
, in
such
a
way
that those
who
do
not
understand
evolution
, or those
who
discard
its
credibility
do
not
feel
they are
being
assailed
, but at the
same
time
are
given
exposure
to
complete
and
accurate
information
. This
may
lead
to a
new
generation
of
students
who
do
not
regard
evolution
as an
enemy
, but as a
part
of
our
natural
world
. The
ultimate
goal
of this
thesis
is
to
create
a
unit
plan
for a
high
school
biology
classroom
,
which
fulfills
the
need
for a
comprehensive
study
of
evolution
that
is
put
forth
in a
straightforward
and
inoffensive
manner
. The
unit
will
fulfill
all
state
and
national
educational
standards
as
well
as
incorporate
many
current
teaching
techniques
.
