Youth

Notes
The
relationship
between
IQ
and
delinquency
has
three
theoretical
relationships
: a
direct
relationship
between
IQ
and
delinquency
, with
IQ
directly
affecting
delinquency
;
no
relationship
between
IQ
and
delinquency
, with a
possible
third
variable
affecting
both
simultaneously
; and an
indirect
relationship
where
IQ
affects
the
experience
in
school
,
affecting
delinquency
. The
purpose
of this
study
is
to
examine
the
relationship
between
IQ
and
delinquency
for
court
adjudicated
youth
, and to
test
the
hypotheses
that
delinquents
with a
lower
IQ
will be
involved
in
serious
crime
while
higher
IQ
delinquents
will be
involved
in
non-serious
crimes
;
delinquents
with a
lower
IQ
will
score
better
on the
performance
scale
than the
verbal
scale
of the
IQ
test
; and
delinquents
with
lower
IQs
will
recidivate
while
delinquents
with
higher
IQs
will not
recidivate
. This
study
consisted
of
24
youths
between
the
ages
of
14-17
years
who
participated
in an
education
program
for
court
adjudicated
youth
. A
separate
evaluation
of the
program
provided
the
data
for this
study
,
making
it
secondary
data
analysis
. The
youth
completed
the
Wechsler
Intelligence
Scale
for
Children
IQ
test
, the
Manifestation
of
Symptomatology
Scale
that
identifies
personality
dynamics
,
environmental
concerns
, and
treatment
and
placement
needs
. The
youths
also
completed
a
self-report
survey
of
academic
self-concept
,
perception
of
school
acceptance/rejection
,
anger
,
delinquency
, and
victimization
. Their
criminal
record
determined
a
youth's
delinquency
and they were
considered
to have
recidivated
if they
received
a
new
criminal
charge
. Their
reading
and
math
scores
were
collected
from
school
records
. To
study
the
relationship
between
IQ
and
delinquency
,
three
t-tests
and a
correlation
analysis
were
used
. The
t-tests
found
only
one
significant
difference
. The
results
were:
youth
with
lower
IQs
are not
serious
delinquents
compared
to
higher
IQ
youth
; a
significant
difference
in
WISC
scores
between
high
IQ
youth
and
low
IQ
youth
with
no
difference
between
low
IQ
youth's
verbal
and
performance
scores
; and
no
significant
difference
between
youth
with
lower
IQs
versus
higher
IQs
and
whether
they
recidivated
. The
correlation
analysis
was
conducted
to
test
the
strength
and
direction
of the
relationship
between
IQ
and
delinquency
.
Significant
positive
relationships
were
found
between
victimization
and
verbal
score
;
relationship
with
mother
and
seriousness
of
delinquency
;
thought
process
and
seriousness
of
delinquency
; and
math
score
and
recidivism
. A
strong
negative
relationship
was
found
between
age
and
verbal
score
, and
age
and
full-scale
on the
WISC
.
No
significant
relationship
between
IQ
and
delinquency
was
found
.
Lower
IQ
youth
were not
found
to be
more
delinquent
either
by
being
involved
in
serious
crime
,
performing
better
on the
performance
scale
of the
WISC
, or
recidivating
compared
to
higher
IQ
youth
.
More
research
is
needed
for
possible
prevention
policies
,
such
as
changing
school
experiences
so
lower
IQ
youth
are
rewarded
differently
or
more
in
school
, or
possibly
changing
the
criminal
justice
system
to
include
higher
IQ
youth
.
