Abstract
The
United
States
is
a
country
,
which
is
characterized
by its
unique
diversity
of
population
.
Within
this
diversity
,
however
,
Whites
,
African
Americans
, and
Hispanics
are the
three
ethnic
groups
,
which
compose
the
majority
of its
population
(United
States
Bureau
of the
Census
,
2000)
.
Due
to the
rapid
growth
of
African
Americans
and
Hispanics
,
whom
are
considered
the
minority
,
interest
in the
study
of
ethnic
identity
development
has
increased
. The
purpose
of this
study
is
twofold
. The
first
is
to
examine
if there
is
a
relationship
between
self-esteem
and
ethnic
identity
. The
second
is
to
investigate
, if
members
of
minority
groups
do
or
do
not have
experience
lower
self-esteem
than
members
of the
domain
culture
.
Two
hypotheses
were
tested
:
It
was
hypothesized
that
participants
with a
sense
of
group
belonging
would
tend
to have
higher
self-esteem
, as
compared
to those
who
do
not have a
sense
of
belonging
.
Second
,
members
of
minority
groups
would
feel
equally
satisfied
with
themselves
as
compared
to
members
of the
domain
culture
.
Subjects
were
high-school
students
of
all
ethnic
backgrounds
from
New
Britain
High
School
. The
group
consisted
of
six
African
Americans
,
55
Hispanics
and
14
Whites
. They were
administrated
tests
assessing
self-esteem
,
ethnic
identity
and a
demographic
questionnaire
. The
ten-item
Rosenberg
(1986)
,
global
self-esteem
scale
was
used
to
assess
self-esteem
. The
Multigroup
Ethnic
Identity
Measure
(MEIM)
(Phinney
,
1992)
, was
used
to
determine
the
level
of
ethnic
identity
. The
demographic
questionnaire
included
information
about
the
participant's
gender
,
age
,
grade
point
average
,
birthplace
,
parent's
occupation
, and their
own
ethnicity
and their
parents
'
ethnicity
. The
results
did
not
yield
a
relationship
between
group
belonging
and
self-esteem
but a
positive
correlation
between
belonging
and
Ethnic
identity
was
found
for
all
students
in
general
, and for
Hispanics
in
particular
. In
addition
a
significant
negative
correlation
was
found
for
all
students
between
GPA
and
self-esteem
.
Finally
,
results
showed
a
significant
relationship
between
years
in the
United
States
and
self-esteem
.
