Title
Evolution
of a
stateless
minority
: the
Assyrian
experience
with a
focus
on the
community
in
New
Britain
,
Connecticut
Publisher

Resource Type
Master's Thesis
Notes
Assyrians
proved
difficult
to
study
because
they
do
not have a
designation
on the
United
States
Census
. The
Assyrians
have been
studied
in
larger
cities
such
as
Turlock
,
California
and
Chicago
,
Illinois
,
where
there are
large
communities
of
immigrants
that
began
coming
to
America
in the
late
1800s
. The
Assyrian
community
in
New
Britain
,
one
of the
larger
in the
northeast
, has not been
studied
closely
. The
purpose
of this
thesis
is
to
compare
the
community
in
New
Britain
to those in
larger
cities
and to
examine
what the
lives
of
Assyrian
immigrants
was
like
in
regards
to
family
and
church
life
. The
approach
to this
topic
was
twofold
.
First
,
secondary
literature
was
used
for
background
information
on
immigration
,
Assyrians
and also
New
Britain
.
Second
,
primary
sources
were
vital
to this
project
.
Newspaper
articles
from the
early
to
mid-twentieth
century
all
the
way
to the
present
,
told
a
story
of the
Assyrians
throughout
the
world
as
well
as in
New
Britain
. In
addition
to
newspaper
articles
,
oral
interviews
were an
important
way
of
finding
out
the
actual
stories
of these
immigrants
.
Eight
Assyrians
were
formally
interviewed
. They were
chosen
because
their
parents
were
some
of the
first
Assyrian
immigrants
to
come
to
New
Britain
,
mostly
from the
Urmia
region
of what was then
Persia
. They
came
here
because
in
part
of
family
and
because
of
growing
industry
. The
researcher
also
used
her
own
Assyrian
background
to
give
a
third
generation
perspective
. They were
asked
about
their
parents
, what they
did
for
work
,
about
their
journey
to
America
and
why
they
came
to the
New
Britain
area
. They were also
asked
about
being
Assyrian
.
Did
being
Assyrian
influence
you
and
most
importantly
what
does
being
Assyrian
mean
to
you
? These
Assyrians
were
able
to
provide
invaluable
information
on their
parent's
journey
to
America
and what
life
was
like
in
New
Britain
as a
second
generation
immigrant
. The
Assyrians
of
New
Britain
,
it
was
discovered
, are a
close
knit
group
,
just
like
the
communities
in
Turlock
and
Chicago
. Their
family
and
church
life
are
very
important
to how they
live
their
lives
everyday
.
While
they
remain
a
minority
without
a
homeland
, they as a
community
remain
close
and
confident
that the
Assyrian
culture
and
heritage
will
carry
on.
