Notes
The
study
of
second
language
learning
and
acquisition
is
an
on-going
process
. For
decades
teachers
have
searched
for
methodologies
which
maximize
student
learning
and
production
in a
foreign
language
.
Traditionally
teachers
used
rote
memorization
and
translation
techniques
,
following
the
Grammar-Translation
or
Audiolingual
methods
. With
Steven
Krashen
at the
forefront
researchers
are
considering
the
ways
in
which
learning
a
second
language
mimics
learning
the
first
language
.
Instructors
are
responding
to
Krashen's
theories
concerning
the
brain
and
it
processes
and are
using
more
natural
first
language
activities
in their
classrooms
.
Methodologies
which
incorporate
these
standards
,
such
as
Total
Physical
Response
and
Suggestopedia
, are
being
used
more
and
more
frequently
. The
challenge
for
teachers
,
however
,
is
to
find
a
balance
between
the
older
and
newer
ideas
.
Classrooms
are
typically
structured
according
to
traditional
teaching
approaches
and
assessments
. These are not
necessarily
the
best
environments
for
students
to
truly
acquire
second
languages
.
Nonetheless
,
teachers
need
to
find
ways
to
create
genuine
and
meaningful
experiences
in the
second
language
. This
study
tries
to
offer
a
variety
of
activities
and
resources
for
teachers
to
use
to
create
lively
learning
environments
.
It
gives
a
brief
outline
of the
common
teaching
practices
.
Additionally
,
obstacles
in the
classroom
which
hinder
second
language
acquisition
and
learning
are also
discussed
;
suggestions
are
given
to
abate
these
common
problems
.
Finally
, an
assessment
instrument
is
given
to
help
instructors
evaluate
their
students
'
language
abilities
. A
rubric
is
provided
to
help
teachers
relate
their
students
'
capabilities
with the
descriptions
of the
National
Standards
according
to
ACTFL
.
