Players

Date

Resource Type
Master's Thesis
Notes
Although
sports
related
injuries
have
shown
a
decline
since
the
1960's
, the
incidence
of
concussion
seems
to have
risen
.
It
is
estimated
that
soccer
players
suffer
significant
concussion
during
their
playing
career
. The
resulting
memory
,
cognitive
and
other
neurological
effects
have
received
little
attention
. To
date
,
studies
have
focused
more
on the
physical
aspects
of the
injuries
. The
purpose
of the
present
study
is
twofold
.
First
, to
test
the
hypothesis
that
soccer
players
show
deficits
on
cognitive
function
.
Second
, to
determine
whether
offense
players
show
significantly
more
deficits
than
defense
players
.
Sixty
participants
were
recruited
from the
Hartford
area
. They
comprised
two
groups
;
thirty
soccer
players
and
thirty
aged
and
education-matched
non-soccer
players
. They were
administered
cognitive
tests
assessing
areas
of
memory
,
attention
,
visual
motor
function
and
self-reports
of
cognitive
failures
. The
results
revealed
significant
differences
between
soccer
players
and
non-soccer
players
on the
Consonant
Trigram
, a
test
of
short
term
memory
and
attention
. There were
no
significant
differences
on the
other
tests
administered
.
Implications
of these
findings
and
directions
for
future
research
are
reviewed
.
