Notes
For
years
researchers
have
provided
evidence
to
support
the
fact
that
males
outperform
females
in
mathematics
. In this
study
,
eighth
grade
mathematics
performance
, as
evidenced
by
year-end
average
and
Connecticut
Mastery
Test
score
, was
compared
by
gender
,
age
, and
course
level
. The
population
consisted
of
467
eighth
grade
students
(247
female
and
220
male)
from a
middle/upper
socio-economic
community
in
central
Connecticut
.
Analysis
of
Variance
(ANOVA)
showed
that the
students
course
level
has a
statistically
significant
effect
on
both
CMT
score
and
academic
grade
earned
.
ANOVA
and
Regression
Analysis
showed
that
male
and
female
students
performed
equally
well
on the
CMT
while
the
girls
outperformed
the
boys
in the
academic
grade
earned
, but
error
variance
had an
effect
for
both
CMT
and
grade
earned
.
Conclusions
pose
more
questions
and an
opportunity
for
further
research
. As
opposed
to
years
of
research
evidence
, this
particular
study
shows
girls
and
boys
performing
equally
well
on the
Connecticut
Mastery
Test
, and
girls
outperforming
boys
based
upon
year-end
averages
.
