Title
Development
of a
protocol
for
identifying
DNA
markers
from the
pseudoautosomal

in a

Notes
The
pairing
and
recombination
of
homologous
regions
of the
X
and
Y
chromosomes
, in an
area
known
as the
pseudoautosomal
region
(PAR)
, has been a
phenomenon
of
interest
since
its
discovery
in
1934
. Its
presence
seems
to be
limited
to
eutherian
mammals
, as the
marsupial
species
thus
far
investigated
do
not
appear
to have this
region
on their
X
and
Y
chromosomes
.
Mammalian
species
do
not
appear
to have a
consensus
of
genes
in the
region
, with
different
genes
appearing
in the
PAR
of
different
species
. This
region
has been
located
and
investigated
in
many
different
mammals
, but the
PAR
in
Rattus
norvegicus
does
not
yet
appear
to have been
found
despite
physical
and
biochemical
evidence
suggesting
that
it
does
indeed
exist
.
F2
mapping
and
radiation
hybrid
mapping
have
limitations
when
trying
to
locate
the
PAR
,
however
, the
use
of a
backcross
population
of
rats
may
, by the
simplicity
of the
pattern
of
alleles
produced
from an
F1
female
backcross
and the
reciprocal
F1
male
backcross
,
aid
in the
identification
of the
PAR
. The
characterization
of a
184-member
panel
of
backcross
rats
, and the
use
of
DNA
markers
mapped
to
more
than
one
genomic
site
by
different
mapping
methods
,
may
facilitate
location
of this
elusive
region
of the
rat
genome
.
