Abstract
Coping
with
everyday
life
stressors
is
a
salient
topic
in
our
fast-paced
society
. The
field
of
Health
Psychology
has an
active
interest
in the
study
of
personality
in the
stress
and
coping
process
, and its
relationship
to
well-being
. The
present
study
investigated
whether
types
of
coping
(problem-focused
or
emotion-focused)
mediated
the
relation
between
the
personality
dimensions
of
neuroticism
,
extraversion
, and
conscientiousness
; and
well-being
.
Graduate
students
,
workplace
employees
,
mall
shoppers
, and
residents
of
Rocky
Hill
(N=142)
completed
a
survey
packet
that
included
the
Satisfaction
with
Life
Scale
(SWL
;
Diener
et
.
al
,
1985)
, the
General
Well-Being
Schedule
(GWB
;
Fazio
,
1977)
, the
NEO-FFI
(Costa
&
McCrae
,
1989)
, and the
Brief
Coping
Orientation
to
Problem
Scale
(Brief
COPE
;
Carver
,
1997)
.
Correlations
supported
hypotheses
that
extraversion
and
conscientiousness
would be
positively
related
to
well-being
, and that
neuroticism
would be
negatively
related
to
well-being
.
Multiple
regression
analyses
supported
hypotheses
that
individuals
high
in
neuroticism
would be
more
likely
to
use
emotion-focused
coping
, and that
individuals
high
in
extraversion
and
conscientiousness
would be
more
likely
to
use
problem-focused
coping
. There was
partial
support
based
on
regression
analyses
for the
hypothesis
that
coping
would
mediate
the
personality/well-being
relationships
, in that
some
evidence
for
problem-focused
coping
and
conscientiousness
using
the
GWB
was
found
. The
present
study
explored
dispositional
coping
styles
,
i.e.
, how
people
typically
cope
with
stressors
.
Coping
,
however
,
is
a
dynamic
process
, and
future
research
may
consider
a
longitudinal
approach
to
more
fully
explore
coping
patterns
and
mediating
effects
.
