Notes
The
value
of
homework
as
part
of the
educational
process
has been
debated
for
many
years
.
Some
researchers
believe
that
homework
is
critical
to
learning
and
development
,
while
others
indicate
that there
is
no
benefit
to the
practice
of
homework
. The
stance
of
some
researchers
is
that
only
a
specific
type
of
assignment
is
helpful
to
students
and not
all
homework
has a
positive
effect
upon
student
learning
. These
experts
suggest
only
assigning
homework
when
it
will be
meaningful
and
beneficial
to
all
, or at
least
,
most
students
. The
purpose
of this
study
was to
examine
students
'
attitudes
toward
homework
and the
impact
of
differentiating
homework
assignments
in
accelerated
mathematics
classes
, as
related
to
students
'
attitudes
about
homework
. The
study
took
place
in a
suburban
school
where
students
in the
experimental
class
were
given
differentiated
assignments
for a
single
unit
of
mathematics
and
students
in a
control
class
all
received
the
same
assignment
.
Prior
to the
beginning
of the
experiential
unit
,
students
in
both
classes
were
asked
to
complete
a
questionnaire
to
establish
their
attitude
towards
homework
.
Students
continued
to
complete
the
questionnaire
for
each
assignment
given
during
the
investigation
. The
researcher
noted
any
changes
in
students
'
attitude
towards
homework
as
indicated
by
student
responses
on the
questionnaires
given
before
the
homework
was
differentiated
, to those
given
during
the
differentiation
. The
researcher
investigated
whether
or not there was the
same
variation
in
attitude
between
the
experimental
class
and the
control
class
in the
same
way
.
Finally
, the
researcher
analyzed
the
achievement
of
all
students
on
assessments
during
this
time
period
to
ascertain
if a
correlation
existed
between
differentiated
homework
and
academic
achievement
in
mathematics
during
this
unit
.
