Real-Life
Situations
Help
Sixth
Graders
Understand
the
Meaning
of
Multiplication
of
Fractions
?

Notes
This
investigation
examined
the
impact
real-life
situations
have on the
understanding
of
multiplication
of
fractions
.
Two
groups
of
sixth
graders
,
each
consisting
of
15
students
,
came
to
instruction
with
prior
knowledge
related
to the
partition
notion—the
process
of
dividing
a
whole
or
unit
into
equal-sized
parts
.
Students
were also
asked
to
use
their
prior
knowledge
of
basic
multiplication
facts
in
order
to
bridge
the
multiplication
of
whole
numbers
to the
multiplication
of
fractions
. The
experimental
group
was
exposed
to
real-life
situations
as
well
as
symbolic
and
iconic
instructional
methods
in
order
to
develop
a
meaningful
understanding
of
multiplication
of
fractions
,
while
the
control
group
used
traditional
textbook
methods
utilizing
only
symbolic
and
iconic
instructional
methods
to
find
correct
answers
. The
control
group
, as
well
as the
experimental
group
, was
pre-
and
post-tested
with the
same
teacher-made
instrument
. This
investigation
took
about
one
month
to
complete
. The
results
suggested
that the
experimental
group
had a
richer
understanding
of
multiplication
of
fractions
due
to the
exposure
to
real-life
situations
. The
control
group
understood
how to
multiply
fractions
;
however
, there was
no
significant
indication
that they
grasped
the
real-life
meaning
of
multiplication
of
fractions
on the
symbolic
and
iconic
levels
.
Performance
of the
experimental
and
control
groups
on the
subtests
involving
the
creation
of
word
problems
showed
a
significant
difference
between
the
pre-
and
post-test
. The
findings
supported
the
position
that
teaching
methods
that
involve
real-life
situations
made
a
difference
in the
understanding
of
multiplication
of
fractions
.
