Title
Effect
of
recreational
swimming
on the
health
of
plant
and
animal
life
in
Scovill
Reservoir
,
Wolcott
,
Connecticut
Publisher
Central Connecticut State University
Date
2007
Resource Type
Master's Thesis
Notes
This
study
sought
to
determine
if
recreational
swimming
had an
impact
on the
quality
of
water
and the
health
of
plant
and
animal
species
in the
Scovill
Reservoir
in
Wolcott
,
Connecticut
.
Specifically
,
it
was
designed
to
find
out
the
extent
to
which
seasonal
changes
in
climate
impacts
the
levels
of
eight
parameters
namely
:
water
depth
,
water
temperature
,
pH
,
turbidity
,
conductivity
, and
concentrations
of
dissolved
oxygen
,
phosphorus
, and
nitrogen
in the
Reservoir
.
Other
objectives
were to
find
out
if
recreational
swimming
also
contributed
in any
way
to the
presence
of the
above
parameters
in the
Scovill
Reservoir
in
Wolcott
,
Connecticut
.
Three
sampling
sites
were
selected
to
test
for the
presence
of the
eight
parameters
. The
first
site
was the
upper
portion
of the
Scovill
Reservoir
,
another
was
sited
in the
lower
portion
where
recreational
swimming
takes
place
, and
last
was at the
outlet
stream
.
Samples
of the
eight
parameters
were
collected
from
each
site
on a
weekly
basis
within
a
one
year
period
.
Maximum
,
minimum
, and
average
values
for
each
parameter
were then
collated
into
tables
and
plotted
on
graphs
.
Later
,
all
the
parameters
were
analyzed
using
the
univariate
and
multivariate
time
series
analysis
techniques
. The
data
analyses
revealed
no
correlation
between
seasonal
changes
in
climate
and
all
the
parameters
.
None
of the
water
quality
parameters
were
significantly
affected
by
seasonal
changes
in the
Scovill
Reservoir
.
It
was also
revealed
that there was
no
relationship
between
recreational
swimming
and the
eight
parameters
. In
fact
, there was
inconclusive
evidence
to
prove
that any of the
measured
parameters
were
negatively
impacted
by
recreational
swimming
.
No
correlation
was also
detected
between
recreational
swimming
and the
health
of
plant
and
animal
life
in the
Scovill
Reservoir
in
Wolcott
,
Connecticut
.
All
other
measured
parameters
fell
within
the
outlined
standards
for a
body
of
water
classified
as
Mesotrophic
in
Connecticut
,
one
which
supports
healthy
populations
of
plant
and
animal
life
. In
view
of the
above
findings
, the
study
recommended
that the
town
of
Wolcott
should not
take
any
action
to
reduce
the
current
level
of
recreational
activity
at the
Scovill
Reservoir
. The
town
may
however
monitor
the
reservoir
for
contamination
and also
maintain
oversight
of the
recreational
swimming
facility
,
trash
receptacles
and
bathroom
facilities
. To
maintain
levels
of
surface
runoff
that
infiltrate
the
reservoir
, the
study
recommended
that
policy
makers
should
reduce
or
even
prevent
further
land
development
in the
region
surrounding
the
reservoir
. With
regard
to
future
studies
, the
study
recommended
that
future
studies
should
incorporate
the
measuring
of
bacteria
and
toxic
chemicals
. An
investigation
of the
influence
of
Dimictic
Thermal
Stratification
on
measured
parameters
would also be
beneficial
.
It
would also be
beneficial
to
study
the
attendance
of the
recreational
facility
,
specifically
by
age
groups
, to
draw
a
more
accurate
correlation
between
age
and
recreational
use
of the
reservoir
.
