Notes
Pets
may
have an
effect
on the
cardiovascular
and
psychological
health
of their
owners
.
People
with
psychological
and/or
physiological
health
problems
such
as
hypertension
,
cardiovascular
disease
, or
depression
may
find
health
benefits
in the
acquisition
of a
companion
pet
.
Having
a
pet
can
contribute
to
survival
among
heart
attack
survivors
,
decrease
heart
rate
and
blood
pressure
, and
lead
to
less
frequent
visits
to
physicians
by
elderly
people
.
Pets
may
also
serve
as a
source
of
affection
,
provide
structure
for a
retired
person
, and
increase
levels
of
both
social
activity
and
exercise
.
People
report
strong
bonds
with their
pets
and
consider
them a
significant
source
of
social
support
.
Health
care
professionals
should
include
pet
ownership
status
as
part
of their
psychosocial
assessment
when
examining
patients
.
Prescription
medications
to
treat
both
physical
and
psychological
conditions
can
be
very
expensive
and
can
often
produce
unwanted
side
effects
. If
acquiring
a
pet
may
help
alleviate
some
health
problems
, this
information
could
be
used
by
health
care
professionals
to
educate
patients
on
additional
aspects
of how to
improve
their
health
.
Having
pets
can
also
trigger
allergies
,
lead
to a
risk
of
bites
, and have
large
financial
costs
. If a
patient
feels
that
adopting
a
pet
may
help
him or her to
relax
, to
get
more
exercise
, or to
enrich
his or her
life
,
pet
ownership
may
be
worth
exploring
, but not
before
carefully
considering
the
type
and
breed
of
pet
, the
patient's
ability
to
take
on the
responsibility
, and the
financial
cost
associated
with
owning
a
pet
.
