Notes
The
purpose
of these
two
studies
was to
investigate
the
potential
of
cognitive
training
to
reduce
cognitive
decline
in
healthy
older
adults
and
individuals
with
dementia
. The
first
study
included
thirty
older
adults
without
dementia
who
were
assessed
with a
neuropsychological
battery
and
subsequently
entered
into a
12-week
group-based
cognitive
training
program
.
Study
2
included
six
older
adults
with
moderate
to
severe
dementia
living
in a
secured
memory
impairment
unit
in an
assisted
living
community
. These
individuals
were
assessed
with a
similar
battery
and
participated
in a
six-week
combined
interactive
group-based
and
individual
computer-based
cognitive
training
program
.
Study
1
revealed
that
older
adults
without
dementia
improved
on
measures
of
overall
cognitive
functioning
,
including
short-term
memory
,
new
learning
, and
skills
related
to
visual
motor
tracking
,
divided
attention
and
cognitive
flexibility
,
conceptual
and
visual
tracking
which
appeared
to
generalize
to
improved
activities
of
daily
living
.
Study
2
showed
that
older
adults
with
moderate
to
severe
dementia
in the
training
program
improved
on
measures
of
overall
cognitive
functioning
including
short-term
memory
,
cognitive
failures
, and on a
caregiver
report
of
socialization
and
behavior
. Also, these
individuals
did
not
demonstrate
any
significant
decline
on any of the
measures
from
pre-test
to
post-test
. These
two
preliminary
studies
indicate
that
cognitive
training
may
effectively
reduce
decline
and
even
improve
some
cognitive
and
behavioral
functions
in
older
adults
with and
without
dementia
.
