Title
Case
of
Pinnacle
Heights
: a
historical
geographical
materialist
analysis
of a
modern
public
housing
project
in
New
Britain
,
Connecticut
Publisher
Central Connecticut State University
Date
2007
Resource Type
Master's Thesis
Notes
In
1952
,
Pinnacle
Heights
became
the
second
public
housing
project
in
New
Britain
,
Connecticut
that was a
product
of the
state's
Moderate
Rental
Housing
Program
.
Completed
in
1954
,
Pinnacle
Heights
provided
450
units
of
modern
affordable
public
housing
until
2006
.
Today
,
Pinnacle
Heights
is
vacant
,
boarded
up
, and
deteriorating
, as the
City
of
New
Britain
finalizes
plans
for
demolition
and
redevelopment
of the
site
for
commercial
use
.
However
, by
looking
at the
blighted
structure
,
it
is
impossible
to
know
that the
construction
and
last
days
of
Pinnacle
Heights
were
products
of
dynamic
historical
,
political
, and
socio-economic
processes
. As
part
of
New
Britain's
urban
geography
, the
development
of
Pinnacle
Heights
interconnects
with the
history
of the
city's
manufacturing
industry
. Its
construction
and
destruction
were
interconnected
with the
socio-economic
processes
of
modern
capitalism
. This
thesis
interprets
the
development
of
Pinnacle
Heights
using
the
methodology
of
historical
geographical
materialism
which
examines
urban
geography
as a
component
of
historical
,
political
, and
socio-economic
processes
. The
methodology
itself
is
based
on the
framework
of
historical
materialism
,
which
emphasizes
that an
interconnected
process
of
social
relations
and
material
conditions
is
the
principal
basis
of
historical
development
and,
thus
,
urban
geography
.
Since
the
1960s
,
Marxist
geographers
have been
refining
the
methodology
of
historical
geographical
materialism
.
Thus
, the
methodology
examines
the
historical
development
of
urban
geography
by
viewing
it
in
relation
to
socio-economic
formation
,
particularly
based
on the
capitalist
mode
of
production
.
