Effects

Citizenship

Notes
In the
recent
past
there has been a
growing
concern
for the
decline
in
civic
and
political
attitudes
long
associated
with a
spirit
of
citizenship
in
America
(Keeter
,
Zukin
,
Andolina
,
&
Jenkins
,
2002
;
Putnam
,
2000)
. A
review
of the
literature
suggests
that
gaining
insight
into the
dynamics
of
effective
characteristics
of
community
service
and
service-learning
programs
may
be
useful
in
counteracting
this
trend
(Astin
,
Sax
,
&
Avalos
,
1999)
.
Research
has
suggested
that
community
service
leads
to
greater
change
in
participants
when
they have
direct
contact
with the
beneficiaries
of
service
and
when
they have the
opportunity
to
reflect
on their
experiences
(Eyler
&
Giles
,
1999)
.
Yet
no
studies
have
reported
exploring
the
potential
interaction
between
direct
contact
and
reflection
. The
present
study
investigated
this
potential
interaction
effect
.
It
was
hypothesized
that
service
providers
who
engaged
in
more
reflection
on their
service
would
show
a
stronger
relationship
between
direct
contact
and
citizenship
. The
present
study
used
data
from an
evaluation
study
of
AmeriCorps
(Jastrzab
et
al.
,
2004)
.
Participants
(n
=
1,652)
drawn
from the
evaluation
dataset
were
AmeriCorps
members
who
committed
to a
full
year
of
service
,
reported
having
direct
contact
with
service
beneficiaries
and
engaged
in
varying
levels
of
informal
reflection
.
Citizenship
attitudes
and
behaviors
, the
outcome
measures
in the
present
study
, were
measured
when
participants
enrolled
in
AmeriCorps
and
approximately
one
year
later
. The
regression
analyses
found
no
significant
interaction
effect
between
direct
contact
and
reflection
.
Overall
, the
results
of the
regression
analyses
revealed
that
direct
contact
and
informal
reflection
were
important
predictors
of
citizenship
. The
value
of
informal
reflection
in
particular
has
practical
implications
for
present
and
future
program
design
for
AmeriCorps
, and
potentially
other
non-academic
community
service
programs
.
