Notes	Since the beginning of time people have used storytelling to pass on history and entertain. During the Middle Ages more formal short stories began to take shape. With the invention of the printing press and the exploration of the New World, short stories and their mass production greatly increased. In the seventeen hundreds stories were used to teach lessons and it was here, in teaching about life in the new Americas, that the Latin American short story was born. A major aim of this thesis is to describe how the Latin American short story came about and has developed over time. Beginning with the middle ages and bringing us through present day, the Latin American short story has evolved over time through political and social change. Additionally, the representation of women has played a major role in shaping these stories and it too has changed with the ever evolving society around them. Women, traditionally seen as weak, and domestic, have adapted to their surroundings and found the purpose needed at different times in history. As each genre of the Latin American short story evolved it reflected the political, social and economic changes the world was seeing or called for. Usually the new genres explored the polar opposite as a reaction to the difficulties experienced in the previous period. And the role of women evolved from the quiet, docile creature to the independent, self sufficient and aggressive free thinking women we have today. This process of the short story and the representation of women has been an evolution, although not a straight line. Yet, one in which each phase was integral in creating and bringing us to the next. It has brought us to where we are today and will continue to evolve and lead us in to our tomorrow.
