Title
An
Investigation
of the
Efficiency
of
Bacteriophages
as
Anti-bacterial
Agents
in
In-vitro
Systems
Publisher

Date
2002
Resource Type
Master's Thesis
Notes
Given
the
prevalence
of
antibiotic-resistant
bacteria
, the
need
to
find
alternative
treatments
for
pathogenic
microbes
, and the
obvious
medical
potential
of
bacteriophages
,
we
designed
a
study
to
display
evidence
that
phage
therapy
is
a
viable
alternative
for
in-vitro
treatment
of
bacterial
infections
of
Propionibacterium
acnes
.
We
verified
and
subtyped
the
bacteria
,
using
chemical
and
fermentative
tests
respectively
.
We
also
isolated
and
assessed
the
therapeutic
potential
of
wild
type
and
mutant
phages
. The
obtained
results
suggest
that the
wild-type
phages
collected
from the
environment
in
which
the
bacterium
naturally
occurs
were
successful
in
destroying
different
biotypes
of
P.acnes
.
It
is
likely
that a
combination
of
all
these
phages
in
one
cocktail
will be
able
to
lyse
90%
of
all
the
strains
. In
addition
, the
isolated
mutants
were
capable
of
producing
clear
plaques
on
strains
not
susceptible
to
wild
type
phages
.
However
,
some
inconsistencies
were
observed
, and
lead
us to
believe
that the
difference
between
infection
patterns
of
phages
across
host
strains
may
be a
result
of
environmental
and/or
host
dependent
factors
and
possibly
of
UV-irradiation
induced
multiple
mutations
in the
phage
genome
.
