Depression

Notes
A
host
of
unemployed
citizens
face
the
grim
problem
of
existence
, and an
equally
great
number
toil
with
little
return
,
only
a
foolish
optimist
can
deny
the
dark
realities
of the
moment
.
FDR's
words
revealed
the
magnitude
of
suffering
that the
Great
Depression
brought
to
America
.
It
was an
event
that
affected
every
American
.
Millions
were
unemployed
.
Farms
collapsed
.
Many
Americans
were
forced
to
accept
handouts
and
charity
in
order
to
survive
.
Migrants
traveled
from
place
to
place
,
searching
for
work
.
Children
were
undernourished
and
many
people
were
homeless
. A
sense
of
despair
pervaded
American
society
.
America
needed
two
prescriptions
to
cure
its
ills
. The
first
took
the
form
of
governmental
economic
reforms
.
Franklin
Delano
Roosevelt's
New
Deal
economic
policies
helped
Americans
through
the
Depression
. The
Federal
Deposit
Insurance
Corporation
(FDIC)
,
Securities
Exchange
Commission
(SEC)
,
Social
Security
,
welfare
, and
numerous
other
programs
reformed
the
economy
and
paved
the
way
for
economic
recovery
. There are
numerous
works
that
detail
exactly
how these
programs
functioned
, and the
methods
by
which
they
accomplished
their
goals
.
