Notes
Migration
is
a
phenomenon
that has been
present
globally
since
the
era
of
written
history
and
even
pre-historic
times
.
Ethnic
groups
have
always
followed
a
trend
of
movement
from
one
geographical
location
to
another
,
primarily
for the
purpose
of
survival
. The
region
that
came
to be
known
as the
West
Indies
has been
experiencing
inward
, as
well
as
outward
migration
recurrently
since
the
era
of
chattel
slavery
and
European
colonialism
. The
subject
of
West
Indian
migration
focuses
on
studying
migration
out
of this
region
post
slavery
and
colonialism
. This
thesis
examines
West
Indian
migration
with a
focus
on the
island
of
Jamaica
,
after
the
emancipation
of
slavery
until
present
.
Three
significant
events
noted
in this
thesis
are; the
emancipation
proclamation
of
1834
,
World
War
II
and
West
Indian
Independence
. These
events
are
responsible
for the
offset
of
distinct
periods
of
West
Indian
migration
. The
dynamics
of
migration
from any
region
is
very
complicated
, as there are
many
other
phenomena
that are
caused
by this
mass
movement
of
people
.
Similarly
,
Jamaica
migration
has been a
very
important
aspect
of the
livelihood
since
emancipation
.
Some
scholars
believe
that there
is
a
brain
drain
in the
West
Indian
region
that
is
a
direct
result
of
migration
. This
brain
drain
has been
prevalent
in
Jamaica
especially
since
independence
in
1962
, and
it
has
increased
in the
magnitude
of the
effect
on the
island
, as
well
as the
impact
on
developed
countries
that are the
primary
destinations
for
Jamaican
migrants
. The
purpose
of the
thesis
was to
examine
the
migration
practices
of
Jamaican
migrants
and their
opinions
about
migration
and the
Jamaican
brain
drain
. A
twenty-item
questionnaire
was
distributed
to
approximately
120
individuals
with
responses
received
from
89
people
. The
results
revealed
that
74%
of the
participants
either
strongly
agree
or
agree
that there
is
a
brain
drain
of
Jamaica
due
to
migration
. The
results
further
revealed
that
64%
of the
participants
also have a
United
States
citizenship
and
only
36%
are
certain
that they would
like
to
return
to their
homeland
before
retirement
. The
implications
of this
is
that the
future
may
lead
to an
increase
in the
brain
drain
on the
island
since
only
a
small
percentage
of the
participants
wish
to
return
to the
island
before
retirement
. The
results
may
have
further
implications
in
understanding
the
impact
of
Jamaican
migration
. Also,
it
is
apparent
that
despite
the
impression
that
Jamaica
benefits
from
migration
to the
developed
countries
, the
results
does
not
support
this
assertion
.
