Notes
The
United
States
Coast
Guard
Academy
was the
only
military
service
academy
to
change
its
policy
to
allow
women
to
apply
to the
school
,
before
legislation
forced
each
federally
funded
military
institute
to
do
so
. The
purpose
of this
research
study
was to
compare
the
experiences
of the
first
women
at the
Coast
Guard
Academy
(which
has
very
little
representation
in
history)
to those of the
first
women
at the
Naval
Academy
and
West
Point
.
Using
articles
from the
Coast
Guard
Academy's
service
magazines
,
interviews
with
members
of the
Class
of
1980
,
local
newspaper
articles
, and
books
written
about
the
experiences
of
women
at
West
Point
and the
Naval
Academy
, this
study
attempts
to
reconstruct
and
compare
the
lives
of the
first
women
to
attend
these
military
schools
. The
following
research
study
shows
that,
while
the
women
of the
Class
of
1980
at
all
the
service
academies
faced
resentment
and
abuse
from their
classmates
and
members
of their
respective
military
communities
, the
women
of the
Coast
Guard
Academy
were not as
badly
mistreated
as those at
West
Point
or the
Naval
Academy
. The
introduction
of
women
into the
service
academies
was a
turning
point
in
military
history
.
It
was the
first
time
women
were
allowed
to be
trained
at these
prestigious
academies
and their
personal
stories
to
persevere
in a
resentful
and
oftentimes
hostile
environment
are
practically
absent
in
history
. This
study
is
meant
to
draw
attention
to the
women
behind
the
statistics
and
give
a
voice
to their
tale
of
struggle
and
sacrifice
to
become
the
first
female
officers
to
graduate
from the
service
academies
.
