Notes
This
paper
invites
a
reconsideration
of the
circumstances
surrounding
the
surrender
of the
Nazi
concentration
camp
,
Bergen-Belsen
, in
April
1945
.
New
evidence
is
introduced
that
challenges
accepted
interpretations
and
calls
for a
reassessment
, in
particular
, of the
motives
and
intentions
of
Reichsfhrer-SS
Heinrich
Himmler
during
the
last
months
of the
Second
World
War
.
Himmler
claimed
to have
surrendered
Bergen-Belsen
and its
60,000
prisoners
to the
British
as a
humanitarian
act
, and as there
is
no
evidence
that
refutes
his
claim
the
historiography
of the
Holocaust
reflects
the
lie
. The
new
evidence
indicates
that,
instead
, a
powerful
initiative
came
from
within
the
Wehrmacht
which
forced
Himmler
into a
defensive
position
where
he had
either
to
authorize
a
peaceful
turnover
or
risk
an
armed
confrontation
between
SS
and
Wehrmacht
troops
. The
importance
of this
disclosure
is
that
Himmler's
distortion
of the
truth
at
Bergen-Belsen
is
a
significant
part
of the
SS
legend
that
inspires
Holocaust
deniers
. As the
complex
circumstances
of this
study
unfold
on the
following
pages
I
hope
the
process
of
discovery
reveals
the
exhilaration
of
historical
reconstruction
. The
method
used
is
that of
probing
the
interplay
between
situation
and
motivation
, of
tracing
linkages
between
events
, and of
exploring
the
intent
of
individual
perpetrators
,
which
in
parallel
with the
introduction
of
new
evidence
,
responds
to the
current
emphasis
in
Holocaust
historiography
on
focused
,
in-depth
research
that
explores
ideological
,
institutional
and
social
milieu
as
indivisible
.
