Title
Alliance
College
: The
Life
and
Death
of a
Polonia
Institution
Publisher

Date
2008
Resource Type
Master's Thesis
Notes
In
1912
, the
Polish
National
Alliance
of
America
(PNA)
,
embarked
on an
ambitious
project
to
create
the
first
, and
only
,
secular
Polish
American
College
in
North
America
. The
purpose
of the
institution
was to
provide
immigrants
and their
children
an
education
beyond
the
parochial
school
that would
allow
upward
mobility
in
American
society
while
still
being
a
Pole
,
maintaining
the
cultural
values
and
traditions
which
defined
the
group
. In its
history
Alliance
worked
to
accommodate
the
educational
aspirations
of
Polish
American
youth
while
simultaneously
providing
an
avenue
of
social
and
economic
advancement
for the
community
. In
doing
so
,
it
faced
many
challenges
,
particularly
those of
chronic
low
enrollment
and
financial
difficulties
.
Even
with its
noble
mission
,
Alliance's
problems
eventually
overwhelmed
the
school
forcing
it
to
end
operations
in
1987
.
Alliance
College
played
a
unique
role
in the
history
and
evolution
of
American
Polonia
.
Despite
this,
however
, the
history
of this
small
,
ethnically
Polish
institute
of
higher
learning
is
not
well
documented
in the
secondary
literature
on
American
Polonia
, and
neither
is
the
aspect
of
higher
education
.
Furthermore
,
no
text
currently
exists
that
completely
documents
the
history
of this
ethnic
institution
from
beginning
to
end
. This
situation
is
unfortunate
as in
many
ways
as the
story
of
Alliance
College
reflects
the
story
of
Polish
American
higher
education
.
Originating
as a
means
to
advance
the
social
and
economic
position
of the
Polish
immigrant
, the
development
and
growth
of the
school
overtime
corresponded
with the
educational
evolution
and
maturity
of the
Polish
American
community
. By
examining
the
history
of the
school
,
one
can
not
only
gain
an
understanding
of the
change
in
Polish
American
attitudes
of
higher
education
, but
see
parallels
between
Alliance
and
various
trends
in
American
higher
learning
as
well
.
Although
Alliance
ended
operations
after
seventy-five
years
of
service
to the
community
, its
failure
does
not
necessarily
indicate
a
failure
of the
Poles
as an
ethnic
group
or that
Polonia
places
less
emphasis
on
education
compared
to
other
cultural
groups
.
Polish
Americans
simply
found
other
,
more
viable
educational
intuitions
which
supported
their
objectives
of
social
and
economic
improvement
of the
community
.
