purpose
of this
study
was to
investigate
academic
underperformances
in
Connecticut
technical
high
schools
from
1999
to
2003
.
Gaps
existed
in
students
'
academic
performance
between
traditional
high
schools
and
technical
high
schools
. This
ex
post
facto
quantitative
study
used
a
correlational
design
and a
convenient
sample
of
568
ninth
grade
students
in the
technical
schools
.
Connecticut
Academic
Performance
Test
scores
and the
National
Occupational
Competency
Test
Institute
scores
were
analyzed
using
the
1998
Connecticut
Mastery
Test
as a
predictor
.
Multiple
regressions
,
multivariate
analyses
of
variance
, and
Scheffe
'
post
hoc
analysis
were
employed
.
Connecticut
Mastery
Test
scores
in
mathematics
and
reading
predicted
academic
performance
in the
technical
high
schools
.
Male
students
out-performed
females
in
mathematics
,
science
,
precision
machining
, and
electrical
construction
;
females
excelled
in
reading
,
writing
, and
heating
ventilation/air-conditioning
, and
refrigeration
.
Demographic
variables
showed
differences
across
socioeconomic
status
in
mathematics
and
science
.
Urban
students
'
performance
differed
from
suburban
students
.
Blacks
,
Whites
, and
Hispanics
scored
differently
in
mathematics
and
science
.
Relationships
exist
between
the
predictor
variables
and
later
academic
success
on
standardized
tests
with
practical
implications
for
educators
.
