,
racial
identity
development
and
psychological
well-being
among
African
American
drug
users
Publisher
Central Connecticut State University
Date

Resource Type
Master's Thesis
Notes
It
is
estimated
that
approximately
5.3
million
persons
in the
United
States
are
substance
abusers
. The
devastating
consequences
of
substance
abuse
includes
high
rates
of
criminal
activities
,
incarceration
,
high
rates
of
student
dropout
,
high
prevalence
of
HIV
and
AIDS
,
low
birth
weight
infant
,
unemployment
and
large
numbers
of
incarceration
among
African
American
men
.
Although
the
cause
of
substance
abuse
among
African
Americans
is
unclear
,
some
studies
suggested
that this
might
be
related
to
underlying
problems
in
racial
identity
development
. To
date
,
only
a
handful
of
studies
have
examined
the
relationship
between
racial
identity
development
and
psychological
well-being
among
African
American
drug
users
. The
purpose
of the
present
study
is
twofold
.
First
, to
examine
differences
in
racial
identity
development
between
African
American
non-drug
users
and
drug
users
.
Second
, to
examine
the
relationships
between
racial
identity
development
and
psychopathology
among
African
American
drug
abusers
.
Thirty-eight
African
American
drug
users
, and
37
healthy
controls
were
recruited
. They were
administered
tests
assessing
psychopathological
symptoms
such
as
depression
and
anxiety
,
self-
esteem
and
measures
of
Black
racial
identity
. The
results
revealed
significant
differences
between
drug
users
and
non-drug
users
on
all
the
psychopathology
scales
.
Drug
users
obtained
significantly
higher
scores
on the
Preencounter
and
Immersion
phases
of the
racial
identity
scale
.
Among
the
drug
users
, there was a
significant
positive
correlation
between
self-
esteem
and
Preencounter
, and a
significant
negative
correlation
between
Encounter
and
Hopelessness
.
Further
correlations
revealed
significant
positive
relationships
between
self
esteem
and
Encounter
. There were
negative
correlations
between
Encounter
and
Somatization
, and
between
Encounter
and
Anxiety
.
Among
non-drug
users
, there were
significant
relationships
between
Internalization
and
Paranoid
Ideation
. The
results
provide
some
understanding
about
the
underlying
problems
such
as
racial
identity
confusion
and
drug
abuse
among
African
American
users
.
Implications
of the
findings
are
discussed
.
