Reese, Joshua
Title
A
Call
to
Freedom
:
Connecticut
Slavery
from the
Charter
Oak
to the
Declaration
of
Independence
Publisher
Central Connecticut State University
Date
2006
Resource Type
Master's Thesis
Notes
Secondary
educators
covering
the
topic
of
American
slavery
have the
arduous
challenge
of
breaking
down
one
of the
darkest
periods
of
United
States
History
. A
daunting
prospect
for the
classroom
teacher
is
the
idea
of
helping
their
students
understand
the
fact
that the
Northern
states
of
America
profited
from
every
aspect
of this
horrible
institution
.
Lying
in the
shadows
of the
slave
system
was
Connecticut
,
which
participated
at
every
level
of the
institution
,
starting
with
importation
and
continuing
with the
slave
trade
.
Puritans
enslaved
Indians
in the
colony
starting
with the
prisoners
of the
King
Philip's
war
in
1676
and
did
not
stop
until
the
beginning
of
revolutionary
ideas
in
1774
.
Misinterpretations
include
the
idea
that
slavery
in
Connecticut
was
milder
in
comparison
to
Southern
plantation
life
.
Harsh
legislation
and the
passing
of
multiple
'
Black
Codes
' in the
colony
limited
every
aspect
of
slaves
'
lives
and
enabled
cruel
treatment
of
Connecticut
Negroes
to
continue
.
Because
of
Connecticut's
geographic
location
, the
region
profited
from the
slave
trade
,
which
played
a
huge
role
in the
economic
growth
of the
colony
.
Although
Connecticut
had a
lesser
role
in the
institution
in
comparison
to her
colonial
neighbors
, the
colony
continuously
gained
lucrative
returns
based
primarily
on the
slave
system
. The
following
research
will
provide
for
secondary
educators
an
outline
on
understanding
Connecticut's
role
in the
slave
institution
.
It
is
the
goal
of the
study
to
tell
the
stories
of
Connecticut's
past
relating
to
slavery
in
order
to
prevent
misinterpretations
in the
future
.
When
placing
blame
on
one
of the
darkest
periods
in
American
History
,
Connecticut's
name
cannot
be
removed
from the
long
list
of
guilty
parties
. This
resource
will
provide
teachers
with the
necessary
tools
in
order
to
help
their
students
understand
the
Northern
slave
system
and the
role
the
Constitution
State
had in
allowing
it
to
grow
.
