Abstract
This
transformative
phenomenological
study
seeks
to
explore
the
subtle
aspects
of
parental
involvement
in the
Karen
community
. The
research
questions
explored
the
parental
expectations
of
Karen
parents
and how these
expectations
were
impacting
their
children's
success
in
school
. The
research
questions
also
explored
how
Karen
parents
were
communicating
with
children
at
home
and how their
parenting
style
was
affecting
the
children's
academic
success
.
Conceptually
, this
study
was
framed
on the
findings
that the
subtle
aspects
of
parental
involvement
have the
greatest
impact
on
academic
success
.
Data
was
collected
through
face-to-face
interviews
and
focus
groups
with
parents
and
adult
children
.
Participants
were
selected
from a
Karen
community
in an
urban
city
using
a
convenience
sampling
in
collaboration
with the
local
organization
responsible
for the
resettlement
of
refugees
. The
urban
city
selected
has a
concentration
of
Karen
refuges
that
resettled
from
refugee
camps
in
Thailand
. The
participants
'
responses
were
coded
to
find
patterns
and
triangulated
using
the
review
of
records
. A
look
at the
subtle
aspects
of
parental
involvement
was
apt
to
provide
schools
with a
greater
understanding
of how
refugee
parents
could
create
a
home
environment
of
high
expectations
,
communication
, and
positive
parenting
that has been
found
to have the
greatest
impact
on
academic
success
. This
study
contributes
to
positive
social
change
by
shifting
how
we
perceive
parental
involvement
among
refugee
families
.
Implications
for
policy
,
practice
, and
further
research
are also
discussed
.
