Abstract
Chronic
neuropathic
pain
is
an
unrelenting
and
debilitating
condition
that
affects
up
to
60%
of
people
with
spinal
cord
injury
(SCI)
and
severely
impacts
their
quality
of
life
(QOL)
.
Available
treatments
are
limited
, and
attempts
at
pharmaceutical
management
can
often
lead
to
drug
dependencies
.
Therefore
, there
is
a
critical
need
to
develop
a
new
generation
of
therapies
.
Emerging
literature
suggests
that
VR
may
be a
viable
therapy
for
many
pain
sufferers
. The
use
of
somatic
immersive
virtual
reality
(IVR)
will
significantly
reduce
pain
in
people
with
spinal
cord
injury
.
Eight
individuals
with
chronic
spinal
cord
injury
and
chronic
pain
were
recruited
.
Participants
were
introduced
to
5
min
of
scenery
VR
and
5
min
of
somatic
VR
. A
within-subject
study
design
was
used
. The
repeated
measures
ANOVA
revealed
a
statistically
significant
main
effect
of
time
for the
NRS
scores
for
both
the
somatic
and
scenery
VR
interventions
,
F(1

,
partial

. The
Pearson
product-moment
correlation
preliminary
analyses
showed
non-significant
correlations
between
ITQ
and
somatic
PQ
[r(6)
=
-.19
,
p
=.66]
and a
non-significant
correlation
between
ITQ
and
scenery
PQ
[r(6)
=
-.37
,
p
=.37]
. There was a
non-significant
correlation
between
post
somatic
NRS
scores
and
somatic
PQ
score
[r(6)
=
-.23
,
p
=.59]
.
Post
scenery
NRS
scores
and
scenery
PQ
scores
had a
non-significant
relationship
[r(6)
=.61
,
p
=.11]
. The
main
finding
of this
study
was that
short
term
exposure
to
IVR
elicited
a
reduction
in
pain
for those with
neuropathic
pain
due
to
SCI
. This
study
provides
an
insight
into the
use
of
virtual
reality
in
spinal
cord
injured
patients
to
provide
relief
from those that
suffer
from
neuropathic
pain
. as an
alternative
to
addictive
medications
.
Additionally
,
VR
and
IVR
have
potential
applications
in the
rehabilitation
field
.
