Abstract
Body
Image
Disturbance
(BID)
is
"a
distortion
in how an
individual's
body
weight
or
shape
is
experienced
"
(Carney
&
Scott
,
2011
,
p
.
291)
.
It
is
associated
with a
number
of
negative
consequences
including
eating
disorders
such
as
anorexia
and
bulimia
nervosa
. The
present
study
aimed
to
address
BID
preventatively
by
mediating
a
psychoeducational
girls
'
group
designed
to
increase
awareness
about
the
social
media
and its
influence
on
self-esteem
and
body
image
. The
researcher
hypothesized
that
participants
would
show
decreased
levels
of
sociocultural
internalization
and
physical
appearance
comparison
and
increased
levels
of
self-esteem
after
comparing
pre
and
post
intervention
questionnaires
.
Descriptive
statistics
were
used
to
interpret
information
collected
from
surveys
and
written
reflections
of the
group
experience
. The
data
collected
from the
study
was
largely
limited
as a
result
of a
small
sample
size
and its
inability
to
record
longitudinal
effects
. The
findings
of this
research
suggest
that the
girls
'
group
may
have
led
to
decreased
levels
of
sociocultural
internalization
and
physical
comparison
while
increasing
levels
of
self-esteem
.
Future
research
is
needed
to
evaluate
programs
that are
effective
in
increasing
protective
factors
against
BID
and the
negative
effects
of
social
media
.
