Abstract
Achievement
in
mathematics
, as
evidenced
by
scores
on
international
assessments
,
is
a
persistent
national
concern
. The
expectations
of the
Common
Core
State
Standards
for
Mathematics
are for
students
to
make
sense
of
problems
and
persevere
in
solving
them,
create
coherent
representations
of
problems
,
justify
conclusions
and
communicate
them to
others
, and
respond
to the
arguments
of
others
. This
study
was a
mixed
methods
quasiexperimental
design
which
utilized
both
quantitative
and
qualitative
measures
to
answer
four
research
questions
about
the
use
of
learning
logs
. The
study
included
five
mathematics
teachers
and
210
students
(109
control
and
101
learning
log)
at
one
high
school
and
examined
the
impact
of a
12week
writing
intervention
on
mathematics
achievement
of
high
school
students
. The
study
also
sought
to
determine
how
math
teachers
implemented
the
use
of
learning
logs
and what their
perceptions
were
regarding
the
intervention
. Also of
interest
were
student
perceptions
of their
problemsolving
ability
and how those
perceptions
change
as a
result
of the
use
of
learning
logs
.
Analysis
showed
that the
use
of
learning
logs
did
not
produce
a
statistically
significant
effect
on
mathematics
achievement
or the
selfevaluation
of
student
problem
solving
ability
. A
teacher
focus
group
meeting
and
learning
log
implementation
records
,
combined
with
student
attitude
surveys
and
writing
samples
,
provided
evidence
of
ways
in
which
learning
logs
were
perceived
as
beneficial
to
student
understanding
of
mathematics
and
teacher
understanding
of
students
'
grasp
of
math
concepts
.
Students
agreed
that
learning
logs
were
worth
the
extra
effort
and
helped
them
learn
better
.
Comments
by
students
and
teachers
suggest
that
timely
corrective
feedback
on
learning
logs
was
important
to
student
learning
and was
difficult
to
produce
for
experienced
high
school
math
teachers
.
Specific
professional
development
on
providing
effective
feedback
on
learning
logs
merits
attention
in
future
implementations
of
content
area
writing
in
secondary
math
classrooms
.
