Title
The
Causes
of
Underachievement
in
Suburban
White
Males
Resource Type
Text
Abstract
The
purpose
of this
study
was to
provide
a
student
voice
in
investigating
the
causes
of
underachievement
in
suburban
white
males
and
identifying
solutions
which
might
enable
educators
to
increase
their
motivation
and
success
.
Quantitative
data
from
student
records
were
collected
and
in-depth
interviews
of
students
and
parents
provided
qualitative
data
to
create
a
holistic
picture
of
underachievement
in
suburban
,
adolescent
,
white
males
. The
participants
were
white
male
students
in a
suburban
high
school
with
no
diagnosis
of
learning
issues
,
good
attendance
, and
standardized
achievement
test
scores
that
met
or
exceeded
state
standards
.
All
participants
had
failed
or were
failing
at
least
two
academic
subjects
. An
analysis
of
elementary
and
middle
school
academic
histories
did
not
reveal
predictive
patterns
for
underachieving
white
males
;
however
,
student
and
parent
participants
provided
insight
into the
effect
of
school
practices
and
learning
environments
on
student
motivation
and
goal
setting
.
Interviews
indicated
that
teacher
presence
,
which
encompasses
several
aspects
of
teaching
including
expectations
for
student
performance
,
style
(warm
demander)
, and
relationship
building
affected
student
effort
.
Instructional
practices
(competition
or
collaboration
,
smaller
learning
environment
,
curricular
choices
, and
homework
policies)
were also
reported
to be
related
to
motivating
these
students
.
Homework
was a
particular
problem
for these
students
and was
perceived
to be a
frequent
cause
of
failure
.
Participants
reported
long
term
academic
and
career
goals
that
required
school
success
but
indicated
that they were
unable
to
sustain
the
school
performance
needed
for
academic
success
.
Participants
did
not
blame
others
for their
failure
to
succeed
.
Student
interview
data
suggest
that
individual
interventions
might
focus
on
both
long
and
short
term
goal
setting
and
organization
as
well
as
motivation
.
Data-based
recommendations
for
teachers
and
schools
are
provided
.
