Abstract
Research
shows
that
misconceptions
about
language
learning
may
inhibit
gains
in
proficiency
, and that
learner
beliefs
are
influenced
by a
combination
of
factors
including
social
,
cultural
,
personal
ideas
and
proficiency
.
Few
studies
compare
the
differences
in
beliefs
about
language
learning
across
proficiency
levels
and
even
fewer
do
so
within
the
Adult
Education
population
. This
study
takes
a
cross-sectional
look
at
beliefs
about
language
learning
of
beginning
,
intermediate
and
advanced
adult
education
ELLs
using
Horwitz's
Beliefs
About
Language
Learning
Inventory
(BALLI)
.
Participants
are
divided
into
beginners
,
intermediate
and
advanced
based
on
standardized
proficiency
test
scores
.
Results
are
analyzed
by
percentage
and
using
SPSS
. This
study
finds
a
statistically
significant
relationship
between
proficiency
level
and what
ELLs
believe
about
effective
learning
and
communication
strategies
.
It
also
finds
a
consistently
high
level
of
motivation
amongst
participants
and a
belief
that
translation
,
vocabulary
and
grammar
rules
are
more
important
to
language
learning
than
communication
.
