Notes	Studying an ecological system is a complex and difficult process. Studying a fossil ecology is even more difficult. There are few fossil deposits containing not only most of the organisms originally present, but also preserved well enough to make reasonably accurate conjectures as to the ecological niche each organism occupied. One such deposit is the 48-million-year-old oil shale at Messel, near Frankfurt-am-Main in Germany. These deposits are the remains of a sub-tropical maar lake and its immediate surroundings. Fossils from Messel can include hairs, microstructures, and even stomach contents from organisms living there at the time of deposition. At least one organism occupies most of the expected ecological niches present in a maar lake region. Finally, most organisms from Messel have modern counterparts. This combination of factors makes it possible to make a reasonably accurate description of the active ecology of Lake Messel. This paper summarizes new data concerning the Messel ecology since the most recent (1988) publication of such a summary, makes comparisons to Lake Nyos, a modern maar lake in Cameroon, Africa, and highlights the position of Messel as perhaps the most favorable, deep-time candidate for a food web reconstruction based on biological evidence in the fossil record
