Notes	Oxytocin (OT) is a neuropeptide hormone/neurotransmitter that has been receiving increased attention from both neuroscientists and neuropsychologists due to its behavioral effects on the brain and nervous system. At first, it was discovered to be involved in physiological functions, such as during uterine contractions in labor, during lactation, as well as during orgasm and sexual arousal. It was later found to be involved in maternal behavior, the formation of social bonds between mother and infant, as well as pair-bond formation between mates of several species including humans. Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD) are a group of developmental disorders classified by impairments in communication, social interaction, and restricted or repetitive behavior patterns, interests and activities. There is much evidence that OT facilitates social behavior and social cognition in humans. Due to the deficits in social perception and behavior hallmark of autism, and the fact that OT levels have been shown to be decreased in ASD; a dysfunction of some or several components of the OT system is most likely occurring in the disorder. Furthermore, the use of OT as a treatment for ASD looks promising. Clinical trials have shown improvements in social deficits, such as the processing and interpretation of social cues. Additionally, it has been shown to reduce repetitive behaviors and has potential for being used as an anxiolytic treatment for ASD. It also has the potential to repair brain connectivity due to its modulatory effects on plasticity. However, there are still many unknowns regarding the nature of OT deficiencies in ASD and the different forms of administration of OT and whether they can reach the brain or trigger central release. These issues need to be better understood before OT can be developed as a treatment and alternative treatments that target the OT system should also be explored
