Title
Examining
effectiveness
of a
standard
ankle
taping
in
restricting
range
of
motion
during
exercise
Publisher
Central Connecticut State University
Date
2012
Resource Type
Master's Thesis
Notes
his
study
examined
the
effectiveness
of a
standard
ankle
taping
in
restricting
range
of
motion
during
exercise
.
Male
and
Female
Students
(n=15)
were
selected
from the
Central
Connecticut
State
University
Physical
Education
and
Human
Performance
program
.
Participants
had
dorsiflexion
,
plantarflexion
,
inversion
and
eversion
range
of
motion
in their
ankle
measured
and
recorded
.
Participants
then had their
ankles
taped
using
a
standard
ankle
taping
procedure
and
dorsiflexion
,
plantarflexion
,
inversion
and
eversion
were
measured
and
recorded
again
.
Participants
then
completed
a
6
station
exercise
circuit
where
each
station
lasted
30
seconds
for a
total
of
3
minutes
.
After
the
circuit
ended
,
dorsiflexion
,
plantarflexion
,
inversion
and
eversion
range
of
motion
were
measured
and
recorded
.
Participants
continued
performing
the
circuit
until
range
of
motion
returned
to, or
exceeded
baseline
range
of
motion
.
It
was
predicted
that there would be
no
significant
difference
in
range
of
motion
from
when
the
tape
was
applied
to the
end
of the
testing
protocol
. A
significant
decrease
in
range
of
motion
was
seen
immediately
after
tape
was
applied
to the
ankle
. A
significant
increase
in
range
of
motion
was
seen
upon
completion
of the
exercise
protocol
.
Tape
does
significantly
restrict
ankle
range
of
motion
.
However
,
tape
loosened
significantly
by
approximately
10
minutes
into the
testing
protocol
.
Future
research
needs
to be
conducted
to
determine
which
ankle
taping
method
will
restrict
range
of
motion
for the
longest
period
of
time
