Title
The
role
of
geography
in
post-traumatic
stress
disorder
:
tracking
the
terrorist
within
veterans

Notes
Post-traumatic
Stress
Disorder
(PTSD)
affects
thousands
of
veterans
returning
from
deployments
worldwide
. The
purpose
of this
study
is
to
investigate
the
relationship
between
PTSD
and
geography
,
examining
whether
there
is
a
relationship
between
the
two
.
Do
length
and
number
of
deployments
play
a
crucial
role
in the
severity
?
Does
gender
weigh
into the
equation
?
Does
sexual
assault
lead
to
PTSD
?
Does
being
overseas
elevate
the
risk
of
exposure
to this
heinous
crime
? The
main
focus
of the
study
is
on
veterans
returning
from the
Middle
East
and those
who
have
served
in the
Gulf
War
. The
survey
was
distributed
to
approximately
300
veterans
and
conducted
online
via
a
survey
website
,
Survey
Monkey
, and
contained
questions
pertaining
to
PTSD
symptoms
,
treatment
,
therapy
and
related
demographics
. In
total
, there were
fifty-nine
respondents
.
No
specific
group
of
veterans
was
targeted
to
take
the
survey
, and
outreach
was
conducted
through
Facebook
,
Veteran
forums
, and
word
of
mouth
.
Other
means
of
outreach
,
including
emails
to
certain
organizations
and
groups
for
permission
to
distribute
,
received
no
response
. The
results
of the
survey
showed
a
strong
association
between
length
and
number
of
deployments
with
PTSD
symptomatology
.
Females
tended
to
spend
less
time
on
deployment
in
both
Iraq
and
Afghanistan
(average
of
1
year
or
less)
and had
fewer
PTSD
symptoms
. They were
reasonably
coping
such
as by
talking
to
others
for
support
or
distracting
themselves
with
positive
activities
.
Males
tended
to
deploy
more
than
once
and
displayed
more
PTSD
symptoms
. By
learning
how
common
PTSD
is
and
finding
that their
problems
are
shared
by
thousands
of
others
,
veterans
can
better
recognize
that they are not
alone
, not
weak
, and
definitely
not "
crazy.
"
When
veterans
seek
treatment
and
learn
to
recognize
and
understand
what
is
triggering
them, they are in a
better
position
to
cope
with the
symptoms
of
PTSD
,
allowing
life
to
move
on from that
point
forward
.
Thus
,
I
have
made
it
my
goal
to
study
and
understand
what the
Veteran's
Administration
,
Veteran
affiliates
as
well
as
individual
units
returning
from
overseas
can
better
do
to
help
soldiers
cope
with the
environmental
differences
in their
lives
that
trigger
these
different
mental
problems
,
especially
PTSD
.
Improvements
can
include
outsourcing
to
civilian
doctors
or
providing
closer
mental
health
services
for those
who
find
difficulty
getting
to
VA
locations
.
Individual
units
could
provide
counseling
for
veterans
in
need
of
it
year
round
.
Screening
for
PTSD
could
also be
provided
on a
yearly
basis
as
often
times
,
symptoms
do
not
appear
for
years
later
