Abstract
The
purpose
of this
study
was to
explore
how
students
understand
their
college
relationships
.
Specially
, how this
understanding
impacts
their
college
persistence
. The
assumption
of the
principle
investigator
(PI)
was that there
is
a
positive
relationship
between
personal
interactions
and
college
persistence
.
Ten
Central
Connecticut
State
University
(CCSU)
students
were
asked
a
series
of
16
interview
questions
. The
intent
of the
questions
was to
assess
whether
students
feel
as
though
social
interactions
have a
positive
effect
on
college
persistence
. The
results
were
coded
for the
purpose
of
discovering
themes
and
formulating
conclusions
. In
general
participants
in this
study
do
feel
as
though
social
interactions
have an
effect
on
college
persistence
. This
research
was
unique
because
most
previous
research
(Jones
&
Williams
,
2004)
only
focused
on
personal
interactions
and
one
other
factor
,
such
as
race
,
when
referring
to
college
persistence
. This
study
intended
to
explore
how
race
,
gender
,
residence
status
, and
other
factors
all
relate
and have an
effect
on
college
persistence
.
Limitations
of this
research
included
a
small
sample
,
having
a
limited
time
period
to
conduct
research
, and a
sample
of
students
that was
less
diverse
than would have been
desirable
.
Questions
for
future
research
would
refer
to
drug
and
alcohol
use
and
sexual
activity
.
Research
related
to
college
retention
is
needed
.
Poor
college
retention
is
an
issue
. There
is
a
need
to
understand
why
students
are not
persisting
in
college
