Title
The
relationship
between
cognitive
development
and
success
on the
mathematics
section
of the
Connecticut
Academic
Performance
Test
Publisher
Central Connecticut State University
Date
2012
Resource Type
Master's Thesis
Notes
This
study
examines
the
relationship
between
cognitive
development
and
scores
received
on the
Mathematics
section
of the
Connecticut
Academic
Performance
Test
(CAPT)
.
Individual
interviews
were
conducted
with
32
high
school
juniors
who
took
the
2011
CAPT
Mathematics
assessment
.
Students
were
assessed
in
various
developmental
tests
developed
by
Jean
Piaget
.
Regression
analysis
of the
CAPT
scores
imply
that
acquisition
of
conservation
of
volume
and
ability
to
think
abstractly
have
significant
effects
on a
student's
CAPT
Mathematics
score
. These
findings
suggest
that
developmental
delays
in the
domain
of
formal
operational
thought
can
inhibit
the
performance
of
students
from
achieving
success
on this
assessment
. The
results
of this
study
,
though
they
may
be
limited
in
scope
,
could
provide
invaluable
information
to
districts
searching
for an
explanation
as to
why
their
students
are
failing
to
meet
state
goals
on the
CAPT
Mathematics
assessment
.
Further
examination
into the
causes
of
lags
at
various
stages
of a
student's
cognitive
development
would
help
to
further
explain
scores
on this
mathematics
assessment
given
to
students
during
their
second
year
of
high
school
