Title
Police
stress
: the
effects
on
interpersonal
relationship
with
intimate
partners
Publisher
Central Connecticut State University
Date
2012
Resource Type
Master's Thesis
Notes
Many
studies
on
police
stress
have
examined
the
effects
of
stress
due
to the
inherent
dangers
of
law
enforcement
work
and the
bureaucratic
nature
of the
police
organization
, but
few
have
looked
at
individual
differences
in how
police
officers
respond
to that
stress
.
Additionally
,
some
studies
have
examined
the
effects
of
police
stress
on
marital
relations
, but
few
studies
have
ventured
into how
police
stress
can
affect
relationships
with
intimate
partners
. This
research
draws
attention
to
some
of the
factors
(e.g.
,
personality
types)
that
predispose
police
officers
to
stress
and the
impact
that
stress
has on
relationships
with their
significant
or
intimate
partners
. An
examination
of
police
officers
from
multiple
police
departments
was
used
to
assess
how
police
stress
affects
their
relationships
with
significant
or
intimate
partners
.
Overall
,
police
officers
reported
low
stress
,
both
on the
operational
and
organizational
measures
, and
high
levels
of
relationship
quality
. In
terms
of the
relationship
between
these
two
factors
,
it
was
found
that the
higher
the
stress
levels
of the
officers
, the
less
healthy
the
relationship
was with their
intimate
or
significant
partners
.
Personality
type
was not
examined
as a
moderator
of this
relationship
due
to the
low
internal
consistency
. These
findings
suggest
that
stress
and
relationship
quality
are
interrelated
and
police
organizations
should
invest
in
programs
that
can
help
alleviate
officers
'
stress
and
foster
healthy
interpersonal
and
intimate
relationships
