Notes	In the past twenty years the ability to determine the likelihood of an individual's risk to recidivate has become the driving force of assessments in the criminal justice field. These risk factors now play an increasingly important role in release decisions as well as the type and intensity of supervision after release. Historically, criminal risk assessments have been validated on either all male or predominantly male populations. Recent research on the specific criminogenic needs and risk factors for females indicate there may be differences between genders in both risk areas and needs. The Level of Service Inventory-Revised (LSI-R) has been validated in several studies and is one of the most frequently used criminal risk assessment tools in the United States. Research has indicated that the LSI-R overestimates the risk level of female offenders, putting them at a disadvantage for release and monitoring decisions. The Service Planning Instrument for Women (SPIn-W), which has no published validity studies, has been marketed as a risk assessment tool that is more sensitive to the needs and risk factors of female offenders. The present study examined differences on the LSI-R and SPIn- W between female offenders who successfully completed a transitional housing program and those who failed to complete the program. Successful completers differed significantly from noncompleters on the SPIn-W but not on the LSI-R, providing support for the validity of the SPIn-W. It is suggested that these differences may be due to the different approaches that each assessment instrument takes in assessing specific risk factors
